George Shaffer was the first permanent inhabitant of what is now DuBois, moving into the wilderness area in 1812. John DuBois’ first property development in 1872 was a wood mill. He built a box factory in 1881, an iron works in 1875, the Hemlock Mill in 1884, and in 1883 started a firm for the tanning of leather and built a large tannery. Lumbering was the key to the early development of DuBois, but other industries followed. Many deep coal shafts were being drilled to extract soft coal, which attracted the railroads to the community. At the same time, John E. DuBois was erecting two sawmills, one of which was to be the largest in the state.

Today the woods surrounding the Dubois area allow visitors and residents alike the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing and more.
